Waking up TOO early to get on a bus was worth every minute! The Amalfi coast was beautiful in every direction with mountains in one direction, colourful “Italian” streets in another, and the royal-blue crystal-clear waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea in the next.
I stopped first in Pompeii to walk the streets of the 4th century B.C. Roman city! Considering the active volcano that had done a lot of damage in 79 A.D, it was so well preserved by the tons of ash that buried everything! Looking into what would have been bedrooms, offices, and shopping streets was surreal. It had a complex sophisticated water system, amphitheatre, and even a gymnasium. Of course, I was able to view some of the victims of the eruption, frozen in the last moments of their life..- all I can say is WOW!
Next stop was beautiful Sorrento. Learning how to make (then drink) some authentic limoncello made by an overly stereotypical Italian man! It’s very easy to make! Just pure alcohol, add lemon peel, let it sit for a week, then add water, and voila! You have delicious limoncello that burns with every sip! LOL.
After a leisurely boat ride around the area I then did a MUST do for the town – chair lift up the mountain for some incredible views from both the top and the lift. Then back down for sunset with a glass of good wine, and the most incredible seafood carbonara I’ve ever had in my life. It was so good I would fly back just for that meal. Seriously.
Next day I headed to Amalfi and lived like the rich and famous...for just the day. Spent most of it on a boat swimming in the perfect waters, and trying to get a good tan.
1 bus, 1 boat, 1 Margherita pizza, 1 caprese panini, 1 seafood pasta, 1 shot of Limoncello, 2 scoops of Gelato....and the combined 34,000 steps is not enough exercise!
