Beautiful Bolivia

This was one of my favourite tours! A 4wd, 3 day adventure from San Pedro to Uyuni, and it was much more than I could have expected!
Day 1 - Starting nice and early to cross the border into Bolivia, I packed my bags into the back of a Toyota and set off for our first stop along this journey the “Green Lagoon". Gorgeous aqua colour, surrounded by volcanoes, and the white salt layer we would slowly see more and more of. Next to a hot spring spa! Outside temperature – 10° and windy, water temperature – 35° and perfect! Surrounded by views of the green lake, a super relaxing, and very surprising part of the adventure.
Next we drove a little further to 4900m above sea level, past jagged ice (left over from the winter), and into an area with pools of bubbling mud, and geysers! The ground being warm to touch, it conveniently warmed our legs as we ventured carefully through the maze of pools! It was amazing! Pastel colours of the ground, hypnotising, gurgling, grey mud pools, and the constant stream of the geysers was an experience and a half. Keeping in mind at 5000m above sea level, you have only 50% oxygen, it can make you quite dizzy.
Continuing to our last stop for the day at “Laguna Colorado”! A brilliantly pink lagoon that feeds it’s brilliantly pink flamingos! What a totally odd image! Gorgeous! Apparently it is that way because of the algae that is in the lagoon, the same algae that the flamingos eat...changing both the water, and the birds into that stunning colour!
Day 2 – starting early again, we visited the other side of Laguna Colorado, where the pink and blue meet. Greeted by alpacas grazing, and more flamingos, it was surreal! 100% couldn’t believe this place could exist.
From one image to another! Driving into the sandy desert to the “rock that looks like a tree". Slowly eroding at the bottom it looks like it’s going to topple any minute. Passing the hill of Salvador where he got his inspiration for the melting clock painting, and then another beautiful lagoon, before staying the night in a hotel made of salt!
Day 3 – Was the last leg of our already unbelievable trip. Heading towards the largest salt flats in the world, we first stop at a cactus island! The remains of an ancient volcano that was submerged when the area was underwater tens of thousands of years ago. You’ll find petrified coral, gigantic cacti, and even small animals! Then to the best spot in the 11,000 square kilometre, 120metre deep salt flats for some fun photos! An awesome sight of absolute nothingness! Continuing into Uyuni to walk through a train graveyard, and have a last lunch with the new friends.
I finished my Bolivian travels in La Paz with a walking tour of the city (I didn’t do death road, because me and bicycles don’t mix, I would add to the number of people who give this road it’s name). Included in the tour was a walk through of the witches market (which had all kinds of dead, scary, and weird things available), and witness a fortune telling. Creepy albeit interesting. Then, my last Bolivian day in Copacabana (a town on the edge of lake Titicaca) with some cocktails and relaxing views.
1 Toyota, 1 week, and countless places and people I’ll never forget!
